Personal Safety
/Today on Alive in the Fire, I want to share 5 easy tips for developing awareness and personal safety.
With the scary stuff that often goes on in our world, and recent increase in crime locally and throughout California where I've lived (and in Chicago, where I used to live), this is something I think about.
I go for walks and hikes alone with my dog. I find myself looking around when I walk through the parking lot to my car at night. Using public transportation, I'm always on alert to what's going on around me.
Feeling safe is very important to me, emotionally and energetically.
Here are 5 easy things I do to feel more safe in my day-to-day life.
- Be alert. I take note of my surroundings. I walk with good posture, look around, and don't wear headphones. Better yet, I like to walk in groups, park together with friends when we show up somewhere, and walk together to our cars when the night is over.
- Take a personal defense class. Such an empowering experience! Check with your local community to see what offerings are out there, and sign up with a friend. You won't regret it!
- Carry pepper spray and an alarm key chain. This pepper spray by Sabre fits easily in my purse, and I am thinking about getting this sleek one that looks like a lipstick. I also have a personal security alarm from Sabre, and they actually sell both together as a safety kit (only $20). Fingers crossed I never have to use these, but they definitely help me feel safer knowing I've got them within easy reach.
- Try a personal safety app on your phone. I actually haven't done this yet, but want to try some out ;) Here are the ones I've heard about: Circle of 6, bSafe, Watch Over Me, and React Mobile. Have you tried any of these?
- Don't drive drunk (or buzzed) and don't text and drive. Simple as that!
What other tips do you have for staying safe? I'd love to hear!
